I was supposed to have my period at the beginning of this month [January 6th]. Instead I got brown discharge that last about a week. I've heard that could be a sign of pregnancy so I took a test and it was negative. After that I figured it's nothing. It started up again. I took another test just to be sure, negative. I've also been tested for STD's and I'm clean. What could it be??

I've had this happen a lot too. I was told by my doctor that sometimes it is left over "old" blood from my previous period. He also asked if I had been under stress or if any changes had taken place in my life. He said that sometimes you will have this discharge instead of a regular period. I would give it another month and if you still have not had your regular period then I would get it checked out. Hope this helps.

I looked in my medical book and it said that brown discharge usually indicates "old blood". This may be caused from the uterus not completely shedding the products of menstruation, minor vaginal/cervical trauma during intercourse, hormonal imbalances, etc. Also,can happen to women who are on oral contraceptives

I sometimes have this happen to me at the start of my period and since pregancy is ruled out and your concern you can always get check up by your doctor. And if your period don't come soon take another hpt.
