The term BEST will be debated by many. Cheapest, longest lasting, lowest maintenance, best appearance, etc... will also be debated. Some folks will say you already have the best. I personally like pre-stained or painted cementboard siding like that offered by the James Hardie Company and others. JamesHardie Siding

I am a huge fan of the cement fiberboard!! I have a small cape cod home and when I redo the siding in 5 years I'm having that installed. It's more expensive than the thin vinal siding, but the price is comparable to the higher quality vinal. The cement boards are much stronger than vinal siding and unlike vinal, once the paint fades or begins to weather, you can paint it. The cement fiberboard cuts like wood and is installed in a similar fashion. It holds paint much longer than wood siding. I've also read that when it is painted at the factory, the company will warranty the paint job for around 15 years due to the controlled conditions in which the boards were painted. Great advice Ballenger.
