I did a lot of reading before posting this, but still found myself stuck. I have a single lever valve in my shower. It is in a newly built house (less than two years old). I removed the single screw on the tip of the valve, removed the two that are on the 6" diameter round chrome plate that lies against the tile, and then took off the two plastic pieces that are like gears, slid off the chrome piece that was covering the outside of the piece that sticks out, and finally, pulled out the pin that appears to be holding in the cartridge. This is where I am stuck...

I am looking at a white piece with the letters HC on it (I assumed hot/cold). There is a small metal piece that goes through the middle of this piece. I thought this white piece was the cartridge, and by removing the pin, that appeared to lock it in place, it would slide out. I can NOT get it out. Should this pull out? If so, are pliers the best thing to use? I don't want to stress the plastic piece too much as the pliers are grinding into it. All help is greatly appreciated! Sounds like you did everything right so far. Try grabbing the stem with a channel lock or large plyer , pull and twist at the same time. Crude does build up and can make a buildup large enough to cause the cartridge to get stuck, once in a while we have to actually use Moen's cartrdige puller made for this job. Pull on the brass shaft while twisting.

I have tried twisting, and pulling on the brass shaft. However, I am pulling so hard that I can feel the pipes behind the wall be pulled forcibly. I took a few photos to show you. I can't seem to figure out how to post on the forums, can I email them to you for review? Thanks! -Ryan

When you want to post a picture.
1. Click on advance.
2. When the page opens, Click on the attachment icon is on right side of smile face.
3. Mange attachment will open.
4. Click Browse, the Choose file window will open.
5. select your pictueres and double click wait untell the picture is uploaded in the top Browse box.
6. Click the top upload button on the righ, wait until you see the link shows in the upload file from a URL.
7. Close the manage attachments window.
8. Click Submitt Answer and you are done, Good Luck.

See attached. I can not get this darn thing out. I have tried pulling on the white plastic, as well as the brass shaft. No go.

Put your pliers on the white part(needle nose style pliers work the best) then just twist it hard and the valve will turn and be pushed out by the vavle body. Then just pull it the rest of the way out. Twisting the brass piece won't do you any good, it will just spin while the cartridge itself stay in place.. Let us know if this works. ( it will). May take some force, but it will break loose. Turn in either direction.

Note;;;; make sure water to house is shut off before pulling cartridge!! Very important. Please do not go any further without shutting main water off, or you will have a mess.

OK here are a few more tricks before you buy or rent a Moen puller, about $24. First do not consider a slide hammer or anything that will apply a quick, sharp jolt to the valve body, slow and firm is what is needed. Trick #1 slip a very small standard screw driver point down into the slot where you removed the clip, push back on the screw driver handle. This may only nudge the cartridge a hair but it helps to break the crud sealing the valve body. If that is not enough then grap the brass rod from the slide with a channel lock and squeeze tight, wedge a screw driver tip between the channel lock and the outer edge of the valve body and pry. If that fails, some hardware store will rent a Moen puller because a homeowner may only need it once in a lifetime.

Yes, I understand, I was not responding to Rbrige, but for those (like me) who run into this problem and search the Internet for a solution; this web site shows up in Google, and I'm sure others will stubble upon it.

So, you delete my post, even though when someone searches Google with "moen no hot water", this thread shows up, and is how I solved my problem? Wow, pretty idiotic policy. Are you afraid the internet will over flow?
