I live in Pasadena, California. We are installing a 200 amp Electrical Panel between a friend and I, he has more knowledge of electrical wiring than I do but he told me that we were going to install two copper grounding rods six feet apart near the box and run a line to the water main and another line to connect to the gas line, I feel that combining gas and electricity doesn't go together.
Can you ground a line to the gas meter/line?

It's called equipotential bonding. The water and gas need to be bonded near the point of entry (forget the specs).

This is to make sure that all metal fixtures are at a 0 volt potential with respect to each other.

The ground rod is primarily for lightning protection.

Now, you wouldn't want to get shocked when touching your sink and stove with different hands at the same time, would you?

250.104(B) of the NEC says that any metal piping system that is likely to become energized must be bonded, including gas pipes.


Suppose a water line became energized. The arc that could could happen between it and a gas line could easily ignite the gas. To avoid an arc between them you need to make sure they are at the same potential as each other. To do that you bond them.

250.104(B) also says that the equipment grounding conductor run with the circuit conductors feeding a gas appliance "shall be permitted to serve as the bonding means".

We NEVER run an external additional bond for gas piping.

Where installed in or attached to a building or structure, a metal piping system(s), including gas piping, that is likely to become energized shall be bonded to the service equipment enclosure, the grounded conductor at the service, the grounding electrode conductor where of sufficient size, or the one or more grounding electrodes used. The bonding jumper(s) shall be sized in accordance with 250.122, using the rating of the circuit that is likely to energize the piping system(s). The equipment grounding conductor for the circuit that is likely to energize the piping shall be permitted to serve as the bonding means. The points of attachment of the bonding jumper(s) shall be accessible.
