    Drain backup in basement.
    Hi there,
This is an awesome website! Anyway, the drain by my washer is overflowing when the washer drains in the cycle. What would cause this and how can I fix it? Also, the first time you run the washer after a few days, the water smells like sewage, please help...

Are you saying the floor drain overflows? If so, you will need to snake the drain. There may be a cleanout plug located under the drain cover. Can you send me a pic of your floordrain(with cover off) and also one of your washer drainpipe. The more pics the better. Like I said, drain need to be snaked, the pics will just help me tell you were to snake from. Hope this helps, please let me know what you find.

Thanks, I'll try to send pix. Yes the floor drain overflows. There is a drain with a cap next to the washer also. Any thoughts to the smell?

The smell could be caused by the plugged drain. When floordrain over flows the water that is coming out is dirty sewer water. I believe the cap you speak of is a cleanout. Snake from this point. If you can get the drain cleared, it will most likey also take care of the smell. Please still send me the pics, makes it much easier for me to give correct advice. Take care,
