Can 2 people claim the same child.
My fiancé and I have a 6 month old together. We live in a house that he bought. He works and I stay at home with the baby. I'm just wondering, can I claim the baby on my taxes and not him. Or can we both claim him or what? How does that work?

Only one parent can claim the child. If you don't work, your fiancé can claim your child and also claim you as a dependent.

That doesn't sound right to me. I don't think he would be entitled to claim her as a dependent on his tax return. They aren't married nor is she related to him.

It depends... if she has 0 income and he provides 100% of her support he can, under some circumstances. Turbotax.com will walk them through determining it. Head of household covers a lot of different dependent types.

Nope, I know people who have done it. They have a baby together, Mom stays at home while Dad goes to work; Dad is head of household and Mom is a dependent on him.
