Hello,

I have a newly installed steam boiler and I'm having some problems with surging. I've done the research and am prepared to skim the boiler. My boiler has a rather large plug (2.25") for the skim tapping and I'm having a heck of a time getting it out. Is this a brute force sort of thing or should I apply some persuasion? I thought I'd ask before I break something.

Hi Bigp...

YUP! A 2" tapping on a STEAM boiler can be a real son of a bitc* to get out. You can keep trying to remove that plug using a 2 foot wrench or a wrench with a persuader bar...or you may simply be able to remove the pressure relief valve and pour the skimming solution into that tapping (install pressure relief valve back before firing the system).

I actually poured a can of Squick into the boiler and it seems to be helping. However, I read on this site and elsewhere that it is no substitute for skimming from a horizontal tap. I guess I'm trying to hedge my bets in case the Squick doesn't work.

The first application of squick should be cycled a number of times and then you will need to drain the boiler of any sludge/oils that may have collected. You do that by filling and draining the boiler a few times (after 1st squick application) and then add bottle of squick (per 150,000btu) and then follow directions as on the bottle.

Plan on doing this once a year if it helps!
