    Tax Information
    Hi,

I was wondering my husband and I will be married for 1 year coming April 09.
He is currently preparing to do his taxes and was wondering if he would be able to include me on there as I don't have an SS#. Would that be possible for him to do? Would he have to claim me as a dependent? We just want to make sure we are doing the right thing.

    Thanks

    Mija:

If you are a non-resident alien with NO U.S.-sourced income, he can file Married Filing Separately and claim your exemption by putting just your name and the acronym "NRA" where your SSN would go.

This procedure prevents him from filing electronically, but the mail-in return will be accepted by the IRS with no problem.

However, it is MUCH BETTER tax-wise if you submit Form W-7 (with a notarized photocopy of your passport stapled to the W-7) with your tax return and apply for an ITIN.
