Sexual contact between a 14 year old and a 16 year old and being charged
My Son was charged a couple years ago at the age of 16 with sexual contact with a 14 year old girl in Connecticut and is now on the registry for 10 years. He is now 19 and can not get a job, has no health insurance and his life is a mess. He has been staying out of trouble. The problem is that he is so sad most of the time. He has a nice girlfriend ( not the same girl, the 14 year old)but the parents of this 17 new girlfriend does not want her to have contact with my son. She lives in the next state 10 miles from us and my son can't go out of state to even talk to them. My son has really grown up and wants a better life but he is having a hard time with every move that he makes. We would like to reopen the case but we have no money and we are not sure if this advisable at this time. We need help... Any ideas::(

    Hello lab:

It would be my view, that your son wouldn't be eligible for relief from the courts until the 10 years has elapsed. I don't know the details of your sons crime, nor do I know the law. I DO know that sex offenders aren't very popular these days, and relief for THEM is far and few between.

Given the climate today, your son should consider himself lucky to be off the sex registry in even 10 years. Many sex offenders are on there for life.

I certainly could be wrong about this... In fact, if you had money, I'd be LESS wrong. By that I mean, anything is possible if you have enough money. If you can't afford to get GOOD counsel at this point, you're not going to get anywhere. Save your money for some action in a few years...

In the meanwhile, your son is just going to have to deal with it. Yes, it's bad, but it could be worse, and it will end...

    I don't think that's much help, but it's all I got.

Sucks for him, but 10 years on the sex offender registry is better than 10 years in jail (which he may have gotten years ago for the same crime).

I find it hard to believe he cannot get a job because he is on the registry. Illegal aliens can get jobs. High school drop outs can find jobs.

There is a saying, if you can't do the time then don't do the crime.

Your son exercised some very bad judgement in having sex with an underaged girl. Such girls are referred to as jail bait for a reason.

Your son is now paying for this lapse of judgement. I doubt if anything can be done, but only 3 years have elapsed. The first place I would go is to talk with his Probation Officer and see if they can suggest something.

The nbext thing I would do is stop thinking about a job. At 19 he should be going to college. Let him get a degree and show the state that he has learned from his mistake and is trying to get his life back. That will go a much longer way towards getting a commutation or revisit of the case.

You would have to appeal the decision - same thing as reopening the case - and what are your grounds? You would have to overthrow the original decision. Hardship FOLLOWING the decision is not legal grounds, obviously.

He should also stay far, far away from underage girls. If he annoys the 17 year old "girlfriend's" parents enough they're liable to make trouble. Big, expensive, legal trouble.

I think your got out of this with a light sentence in the current Court climate.
