They work well for some women, but not so well for others. Basically they will detect a rise in the luteinizing hormone (LH) which will start to go up when your body is getting closer to ovulation. This is what helps the egg to be released. Unlike a pregnancy test, where it is suggested to use first morning urine, the ovulation kit works best with urine later in the day since levels will increase. General guides as to when to start testing accompany the kits, but they go on averages and many women do not ovulate according to the average. For example, the kit may say to start testing on day 12 with a 28 day cycle, but if you happen to ovulate on day 10 the kit would be of no use to you. I usually suggest to women to start testing a few days earlier than the kit states for this very reason.

Also, unlike a pregnancy test, a line does not mean it is positive. With the ovulation kit the line that appears needs to be the same as or darker than the control line for it to be considered positive. Once a positive shows up, generally ovulation will occur within about 12-48 hours.

Keep in mind, however, that ovulation kits will tell you when your body is preparing to ovulate, not that you actually are ovulating.
