    32-bit or 64-bit
    Hi,

Is Intel Pentium M740 Processor a 32-bit or 64-bit processor? And how important is it to buy a Laptop with 64-bit processor?

    Thanks,
    nagananda

You can research Intel processors here: http://www.intel.com/products/proces...cts_processors&

As for the laptop with a 64-bit processor: programs need to be written specifically for 64 processors, as well you'd need to be running XP 64-bit OS first. If you satisfy both those needs (you have a 64-bit OS and 64-bit applications) then you'll make good use of the 64-bit processor, if not then you're paying extra for functionality that sits idle.

With the "imminent" release of a 64bit OS I would be inclined to invest in 64bit and wait for the new software. The current 32bit XP will run OK on a 64bit machine, you just won't derive any benefits from the 64bit processor.

The key is not whether to buy a laptop with a 64 bit processor but whether to buy any 32 bit processor.

You need to determine what your computing needs are. If they are very ordinary you might might be able to get away with a 32 bit processor for a couple of years. And you can save money by doing so. But if you want a machine that will remain current for several years I would go 64 bit.
