What makes an egress window different than a standard slider or double hung? What is best and money efficient why of installing?

I noticed you didn't get an answer yet, so here's the basic skinny.

Egress windows are windows that allow someone to exit a room or area of the home (usually a basement) as a 2nd means of escape (eg in case of fire, etc). I am not an expert on code where you live, but obviously someone (an adult) would have to be able to fit through the window for it to qualify.

I assume they could be "casement windows" (the kind that crank out) if there's enough room in the window well, but more often, I've seen the type that unlatch from the inside and come completely off the frame so you can get out in an emergency.

Just a note; in most locations, egress windows must be present to call a basement room an "extra bedroom".

I agree and that window actually needs to be large enough for a fireman to get inside with full gear on. Most fire codes will allow a double hung or slider but they must be a certain size, they plan to break out the glass anyway so they just want the periment of the window frame to be large enough.
