I am suffering from halitosis. I cannot smell it myself. I am post op gastric bypass for 5 and 1/2 years and I wonder if this could be related? I don't know, very frustrated. I am also a nursing student and classmates have informed me of my foul breath and a patient even complained to my instructor. I went out last Saturday and the some people I was with were gossiping later to a friend of mine who told me about it. It appears to be very very bad at sometimes and not noticeable at others. The worst part is that I do not know when I am offensive. When it is bad mints do not help. I went to a dentist first and they said nothing was going on in my mouth. I went to a doctor who said he didn't smell anything. I brush and floss and then use listerine and then follow with crest mouthwash. I have no idea what else to do. I have a ton of anxiety about this because I don't want this issue to be present when I start my career as a nurse. ( I graduate in May) The last thing I need is more social issues.

If your gums are fine and you have had a dental scaling done then there must be some other cause for the halitosis. If the tonsils are large, they may be collecting material/foreign matter in them and may be the cause. Try a dilute hydrogen peroxide mouth wash (1 part H2O2 with 10 parts water) and gargle with it.

I realize why this must be frustrating for you if you are to be a nurse. I also suggest you see a gastrointestinal specialist. Or see the specialist again who did your gastric bypass; you are probably right, it could be related.

Absolutely try anything you can think of munchkee to get rid of this problem.

A couple of things... I read last year that the cause of halitosis was found. Sorry, I don't have the information.

Do you think this happens after you eat certain foods like eggs, garlic, whatever?
