Go to start, settings, control panel, sounds and audio devices and then the Sounds Tab on top

Under dropdown box for Sound Scheme, make sure there is one there, if not, use dropdown box to select one

    Hope this helps out

I followed your instructions but when I came to the sounds tab the following showed:
The top box said no audio device
The other boxes were all in grey.
Yet I can hear a music cd OK.

If you are using xp and go to the "sounds tab", there is no box there
    For audio device

Audio device tab and voice tab, do have box for audio device but the sound tab, just has Sound Scheme

    This should help out

Go to start, run and type services.msc
-Go down list till you see Windows Audio and make sure it says Started to the right of that

-If not, right clik on windows audio and choose properties and use the dropdown box to change to Automatic and click apply.

-Now click the Start Button and after that, click apply or OK

    If that does not help

Go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Component Services/Services. Make sure audio is enabled.

Then go back to audio and sound device to see if things are still greyed out

Between the 2 things above, this should resolve issue

Post back if all work out, if not post what you did exactly and what results happened when doing steps

So they are all still grayed out?

Any changes that either happened or that you perhaps made to your computer around the time that the problem started; particularly any software or hardware that you installed or setup.

Have you checked device mgr to see if anything has yellow mark

If so, what has mark next to it (exactly)

Also run this and list what the motherboard is
