My question involves criminal law for the state of: Nevada

I recently got charged for two felonys.
- Possession of Stolen Property
- Embezzlement


I was held for 3 days, but their policy is that if I don't see a judge within 72 hrs I had to be let go and just be given a court date (which is what happened). Now I have court on the 16th of March.

This is my very first offense so I asked around when I was there ( I asked inmates and 4 cops) a total of about 20 people.
All of them said the same general idea. " Be released on probation "

My moms friend who is an attorney of law, but doesn't do any defense or public defense ( just studieds law and works for law) said that I may be doing a minimum of 1 year to 10 years. If its well over 20k -25k worth of stolen items (which I'm afraid it was)...

So if there is anyone who is highly educated in this or has an amount of experience please let me know what is likely to happen.
I will state again that it is my very first offense and very first time being arrested.
I believe I'm a good kid... just made fu**ed up decisions.


So for my first offense what is likely to happen. Please consider my charges and read the entire thing before you give an educated answer/guess.

I would believe the Attorney who is familiar with the laws and climate of the Court in your area and not the Police Officers and your fellow inmates.

We get these questions all the time. Everybody wants to know what they're facing... But, it's NOT that simple... In fact, nothing is written in stone at this point, and EVERYTHING is subject to change...

People seem to think that nothing happens between the time the crime happens and when the judge pronounces his sentence...

NOTHING could be further from the truth. Indeed, that's when EVERYTHING happens. It's when the cops are still investigating, and the prosecutors are reviewing the evidence and their options... It's the BEST time to be PRO active in your defense. A good attorney's influence NOW can effect what a prosecutor will charge you with.

By doing NOTHING, you insure that the only people who are going to influence the prosecutor is the COPS. That ain't good.

Yes, I'm acting now. I'm trying to look for a job and even trying to go to schoo. I want to show up to court so they can see that I'm trying to get in the right path in life...

I'm just worried and scared about having all of it taken away from me when I go to court on the 16th and have me thrown back in jail.

I'll take probation, house arrest, classes, etc... over jail.
I just want to know the likley hood of what might happen...

Do you have an Attorney? Without one you're going to have problems.

We're in the process of looking for one. My mom actually wants to see what the public defendant has to say before we actually buy one of ourselves.

You need a good attorney,
First on the stolen property, remember they can make each item a separate charge if they want to, so you could face dozens of charges of possession of stolen property,

Also what did you steal for the embezzlement charge and how many times and how much

And why were you taking the stolen property, who were you getting it from, have them came to you for a deal for you to give them names and info on who the property came from. *** or did you steal it and just have it, nad they can't prove the threat charges yet.

With this much and so much I would guess some jail time,
But if you are working and can show you are going to change, they may give you probation.

It's public defender. You don't buy an Attorney. You retain one. You are so unfamiliar with the terms that you actually frighten me. There is absolutely no way you can handle this yourself.

Stole tvs, laptops, ps3's, xbox's, etc... the works.
I kept some for myself (which I returned), sold some to a guy who had buyers (who hopefully took them back) and sold some on a anonymous online site. I've done it for about 3 months.

I'm looking for a job now and I'm even going to take school classes.

Maybe I missed this but how old are you, since you started talking about your mom telling you to talk to public defender.

You need a paid attorney, this is going to be a long tough case, and you need a good criminal attorney

I'm no law expert by any stretch of the imagination, in fact my only experience with the judicial system has been on the wrong side of the bench so to speak, but are you 100% certain that you should be discussing what you did in such a public forum?
For what it is worth, since you openly admit to doing the crime then you should damn well expect to serve time. Just my way of thinking but I hate thieves.

19... and I'm working on getting one.
My mom wants to wait to hear what the DA has to say first to see what he/she has to say and then get an attorney if it doesn't look so good. We're pretty low on money.

Also if I get an attorney is it likely I can avoid doing time. Especially if I show up to court with a job and taking part time classes??

No one knows this except the Judge - these are serious charges. It never hurts to show you're productive (job/school) but that doesn't change the charges.
