I recently had my house re-piped and they insulated the pipes under the house. Everything has been going great until this morning when my tub would not drain after my shower. The temperature dropped below zero last night and the tub is next to an outside wall and there is a vent in the crawl space wall next to the pipes. I have the vent covered but could the pipes have frozen with the temperatures so cold? How can I get them thawed without them breaking? Or how can I get my tub to drain? I kept it warm in the bathroom all day and it looks like it could be draining very slowly.

If the tub drain trap is frozen try real hot water in the trap/tub drain. Another method if you have access to the tub drain trap is a hair dryer.

I kept the room closed up and the heat turned high all day yesterday and I'm not sure if that is what helped. If it was frozen and the drained during the night is there a way to tell if the pipe burst without going into the crawl space to look at it?

Try boats suggestion and pour boiling water down the drain. I would wait until mit got a little warmer and check the pipe in the crawl space. If you need instructions on how to snake your tub click on back and we'll walk you through it. Regards, Tom
