I'm going to install an outdoor spigot. I will have to drill a hole through brick. I would like to know what diameter size hole you would suggest. Also, would it be better to drill through the center of the brick or drill through the mortar joint? How high off the ground do you recommend installing the spigot? Thanks.

Tessa... you'll need a ROTARY HAMMER and a masonry drill bit (see 3rd pic.)that is slightly larger than the outdoor spigot.

For an antifreeze faucet (1st pic.) a hole that is 1-1/8" will be plenty large enough. If not an antifreeze faucet then you should plan on a 3/4" hole minimum. The best scenario will be to take the spigot with you and choose a masonry bit just slightly larger than the widest part of the spigot.

Drilling through the mortar joint will be easier, but if you RENT a rotary hammer and masonry bit you can drill right through the brick easily and quickly.

In terms of height off the ground be sure to take location of pipes in basement into consideration , but overall you want the spigot to be at a comfortable height to be used.

Lastly, if you want to install an antifreeze spigot be sure to PITCH the spigot as it goes through the brick wall so that it naturally drains/empties to outside when shut off. This will allow the spigot to drain itself by gravity and will ensure that the antifreeze spigot doesn't freeze up in the future. Of course, you will need to read the instrutions on the box for best job!

You should also plan on installing a ball valve type shutoff with a drain on the side. The drain goes toward the outside... OK?
