My computer says no operating system and I called hp and they didn't help me at all and they said they wanted to take my computer in for repair should I send it in for repair or buy a new computer

There are too many IFs to adequately answer this question definitively.

• Is it under warranty? If so, send it in.
• Is there data on the computer you wish to retain? If so, buying a new one will not help in that regard.
• Were you fiddling with BIOS settings or otherwise making any changes to the computer? If so, the hard drive may not actually be bad.

If capable of doing the work yourself, replacing a failed drive consists of an afternoon of reinstalling the operating system and applications plus the cost of the new drive which is much less than the purchase cost of a new computer.

If not capable of doing the work yourself, the repair cost at a local service facility will likely be 30% to 100% the cost of a new computer depending on what type of computer you purchase, so buying may be the most prudent and would be the route I'd recommend if the costs are comparable and there is no data to be retained.

No need for repair shop, just need to get hold of XP installation disk (I assume you are using windows XP)

Any changes that either happened or that you perhaps made to your computer around the time that the problem started; particularly any software or hardware that you installed or setup.

You can attempt to do a repair installation

Repair Installation
A Repair Install will replace the system files with the files on the XP CD used for the Repair Install. It will leave your applications and settings intact, but Windows updates will need to be reapplied.
