I am going to install solid hardwood flooring. When I ripped up the carpet and put my six foot level on the floor I realized that the flloor were sloping up from either opposite end and meeting in the middle.. The six foot level is like a see saw it rises 1/2 of an inch when I push the one end down.
The room is 26 feet by 14 feet with the joists running across the width. The house was built in the 70s and everything looks good at first glimpse but in reality it was slapped together with no care... These people should be ashamed

My question is whether I should get an ulcer thinking about this as I am dropping this large wad of money. How should I lay the floor? We were first going to go on an angle but I do not know anymore..

Am I right in thinking that thousands of houses have problems like this and yet the hardwood looks and behaves fine..

1/2" per 6' is too much for hardwood to follow. Either jack the joists back in place and shim from below or think about some other flooring.

Upon further investigation it was just one joist that sat half inch higher than the rest.. I sat contemplating what to do. Ripping up the floor and taking half an inch off a forteen foot joist would have been an all day affair for me. Double that because I always underestimate...

Here is what I did. It took about two hours to setup and level out aprox 40 square feet of subfloor.. I screwed two strips of wood to the floor running parrellel to the joist that was too high. I screwed them just above the two joist running on either side of the F%$%ed up joist.. Putting my level from one strip of wood to the other I could tell that it was up over 3/8 of an inch in the centre.. I put two angle irons from one strip of wood to the other spanning them so my router would be supported by the angle iron above the floor. I brought my router closest to the strip of wood and set the depth there because I know that joist and sub floor is good. I then simply ran my router back and forth along the angle iron. Thus leveling everything out between the two strips of wood.. There is not much subfloor left above that screwed up joist maybe 3/8 of an inch but I figure if I run the hardood on the diagonal it will be supported quite well...

I really thought I was pooched, its quite amazing what situation good drugs can get you out of..

And after cobbling up your floor and making it really weak you give a reddie to the only person that actually told you how to do the job properly. Hummmm Hope it works out for you. In the future if you do not like an answer please do not give a reddie. They are reserved to something that is factually wrong.
