How can I find out about who has lived in my house?
My house was built in 1931 and has had a whole lot of updates, it's huge and I love it very much... but we here things and when I say we I mean my children as well. How can I find out which part of the house is original and which part was added and when it was added. I know that the house was not built with 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and a garage. We have a storm seller in the back yard and an old storage building. Whatever is in my house doesn't scare me... but I would love to find out the history on my old house. Thanks for your time... April

A title search at your courthouse will reveal all the owners, as well as any mortgages; you may be able to learn when the house was built and any additions, if any loans were take out by the owner. If you live in a municipality, there may be records of building permits. Some tax assessors have records of improvements to real estate that were used through time to justify increases in the tax appraisal.

    Hi, ASEAGO123!

Greetings and WELCOME to the site! I just moved your question that you had posted in Introductions to this forum topic area so that it would get the most exposure to those who are best able to answer it. Introductions is for people to introduce themselves and we try to not ask questions there.

It can be a little confusing when first learning how to use this site! Your question will get noticed much more in this forum topic area.

We would appreciate it if you would return to Introductions sometime to tell us a little about yourself though, if you would be willing to do that.

I do note that you've already received one, very fine answer from George_1950, above!

    Thanks!

Hi, April. You also might go to your county archives and look through old city directories if they have them. They are cross-referenced by address and will show you who lived in your home, not just who owned it and it also shows what they did for a living, at least ours do. I'm remodeling a home that was built in 1906 and a friend of mine who works at our archives was looking through old directories and found out that my home was a boarding house at one time and had four tenants living there. That also explained why certain walls were boarded up, kooky plumbing routing, etc. :-) Just a point of interest...
