Can I have my sister put into a mental health facility?
My sister is in need of a lot of help. She's 24 years old, recently diagnosed as having Bipolar disorder. She was prescribed Xanax to control her anxiety attacks but doesn't use it for the prescribed reasons... she's been using the Xanax to get high and also drinks heavily while using it. She's cutting and burning herself she says, to distract her mind from her problems. She's also compulsively lying about everything, very sexually promiscuous and irresponsible. She has been lining up man after man, leading them to believe they are the only one she is dating (sexually) only to wind up getting caught and starting it all over again. She is very impulsive and never thinks anything through. She's gotten into a lot of debt in the last year to the tune of almost $10000 with credit cards and doesn't have a job and refuses to work. She lives with my parents who refuse to make her leave their home because of fear that she will only get into more trouble.
I don't know what to do and I fear that it will only be a matter of time before she winds up in prison or dead.
    What can I do?

She needs to see that what she's doing is not the right path for her. If you put her in she will refuse it because it wasn't her idea or wanting to do it. It's like any person who has an addiction they have to want to stop what's wrong in their life. I have a chemical imbalance but I control mine with diet, exercise, and activities that keep my mind off things. I also have a great boyfriend and support system. She's feeling bad for herself right now and needs to grieve before she can change. My advice is give her support don't judge, be there for her when she falls, she will need it. Let her know how much her actions hurt everyone around her and giving her a negative out look, if your negative it will only attract more negative. Good luck
