    Compressor cost
Hi, I have a 6yr old Trane unit. I was told it uses a heat pump. Today, I had a maintenance service for the heat and was told it wasn't properly heating the air. I was told the compressor was reading around 24 amps, instead of the 9.2 amps and that I needed to replace the compressor. What would be a reasonable estimate for the cost of a compressor. Service is coming out today.

There is no reasonalbe cost for a compressor. Local parts markup and local labor costs will change any price given here. If the compressor is not under warranty you might consider a new unit since that will give you a full warranty again. The newer units also have a 10 year all parts warranty so I would check into this aspect also.

I might also say that a compressor drawing too much current can happen with a bad capacitor or start relay and capacitor. So actually the compressor might not be bad it could be that the service person is not good enough to figure it out. You might have it doubble checked before you spend the big $$$$.
