    First: disconect the HD

Boot and enter the BIOS setup (as soon as the computer turns on, there should be something telling you hit __ to enter setup. Its usually [DEL] or [F2] or [F12]

Once in the BIOS. You'll want to poke around until you find the Boot order (priority) make sure that 1) the HDD is first 2) if there is a choice for USB, make it last

Next, look for USB Legacy support. Enable it.

    If that doesn't work...
I would have to assume that since you have a quad core, you USB 2.0... for fun though... go buy a cheap cheap USB hub somewhere, plug that into the PC then plug the HD into that.

Also, how big is the external drive? If over 500GB, you may want to try partitioning it. There are some cases that this has been a problem.
