HELP! My 82 yr old mother tried to color her hair. She hates it. Now she is looking to me for answers. Since I'm a guy I know NOTHING about this subject. But I am my mother primary care taker so its my job to try to help. Is there a product that will remove most of the dye, that's sold in stores, that won't make it worse, that I can get for her to try?

You won't find it at a local grocery store, but she can strip her hair so it goes back to its original color. Take her to a salon or go to your local beauty store. Ours is Sally's Salon.

ColorFix, available at Sally's Beauty Supply, can take out the hair color. However, this won't leave it at her natural haircolor. It'll leave it the color that the peroxide in the haircoloring lifted the hair to (probably a brassy yellow color). After removing the haircolor, you have to re-dye it the desired color.

If you're going darker, you can often simply color over the lighter color. However, you have to be careful. If there isn't enough red or yellow in the hair, you can end up with a greenish or muddy hue.

My advice since you are a guy trying to handle this situation for you mom is to just take her to a salon and pay the $150 to have it fixed right... good luck bud

If you can't afford the salon, you may not want to try to do it yourself because the original color probably doesn't exist. Dye changes the color of hair, it doesn't just mask it. So either pick another color and die over it or live with it. A really strong shampoo like prell will help it fade faster if you decide to live with it. : )
