Ok, so the problem started a couple of weeks ago. First, I noticed that the flush lever was loose, so I opened up the tank cover and tightened the nut to the lever, so that it was no longer loose.

The next several times that I flushed, I noticed that the water was running from the refill tube into the flush valve, but water was not slowly rising up in the tank. So for a temporary fix, I just toggled the valve body where the float is attached, and it would eventually fill up the tank.

After a few days of this, I decided that I would try loosening the nut behind the flush lever, and that helped the toilet automatically refill by itself after each flush. However, a new problem has arisen. Once the tank fills itself up, every 30 min. or so (I haven't timed it), water sounds like it is filling up again for about 5 seconds, then stops.

Not sure if something like this would fix this problem...

Toilet handle/chain should have a 1/4" play or so before engaging the flapper.. ok? Sounds like too much tension on the flapper..?

Otherwise, may be time to replace the flapper or flush valve assembly (I could not bring your picture up). Clearly the FILL VALVE needs to be replaced. FLUIDMASTER sells a complete repair kit.. see picture... with all parts needed to fix this.. ;) You may also want to purchase a flexible closet supply as well.

Check on slack in chain... sounds like the HANDLE or chain may be misaligned or too tight... let me know.. ok?

Is there a way to adjust the "play" in the chain. Right now it's not completely rigid, but more than normal I think. I cannot really see your attached image, but if you click on the link, it should take you to Ace Hardware's link of the "Fluidmaster® Flusher Fixer Kit".

Never mind, was able to do a quick search and found your product. I'll give it a try.
