Hi,

I recently replaced my old thermostat for a Goodman AC system (with electric heat) with a Carrier Edge Programmable Thermostat (Edge). My problem is that after Air handler power off (at the main panel) everything works fine for the first cycle (it comes on as programmed etc, switched off when reaching the right temperature etc.). The problem is that when it should switch on the next time it somehow doesn't work: It will give the impulse-you'll hear it clicking, I even sometimes hear the gear gear up, but within a split second it clicks again and switches it off - any temporary holds are lost and it almost looks like nothing happened. Sometimes the display panel goes black for a second, then comes on with all display signs/messages lit for a moment before displaying the regular program mode again. This process does not throw any breakers out, but when trying to troubleshoot the myself I noticed that simply switching that circuit off and on again will get it to run fine the next time it comes on. I guess the power off must be resetting something?? How come I didn't have those problem with the old thermostat? Any suggestions?

Double check,, triple check the tstat wiring and the set up mode of the tstat,, get back with us

I did rewire, and make sure that there are no shorts.. I could try to post a picture tomorrow. Another interesting observation: If you manually turn off the heat while it is running, you can turn it back on later and it will do another cycle...

You might have to actually PROGRAM the thermostat... try this and let us know...

Sorry, I was not finished to the above... Because by turning the thermostat off, you are resetting the thermostat and it goes through cycle 1 and will stall at cycle 2, again...

OR

You may have to put a jumper between the "R" terminal and "W" terminal...

Wow! Bridging seems to have worked - I connected Rh to Rc with a jumper, I think my old thermostat was set up that way and I should have learnt from it (looked as if they were already integrally connected in the new one?). Anyway, I'll watch it though the next few cycles and see whether the issue returns. Thank You for your help and advice!!

Unfortunately, after waiting for the next program periods to kick in, it started doing the same thing again. And bridging R and W led to constant "uncontrolled" running of the unit. I attached some pictures of the darn thing (and its official wiring logic, and the display unit while its acting up... )

After installation, did you go through the configuration options to assure they are set correctly for your system type? Check the installation instructions for the list of selections. Press and hold the fan button for 10 seconds to access menu.

I looked through all the installer program options and everything seems fine.. even the service test sequence is OK, so somehow the problem seems to be related to the cycles... or second and subsequent cycle start up attempts.. Can anyone give me an idea of the internal logic of that? Manual on-off-on seems to be OK. Switching from heat mode to off does not do a real reset, so I'm still outside flipping the jumper in an out to get it to run properly..

Double-check the wiring. Is the orange wire on the C terminal connected to the low voltage common circuit?

To be honest - that orange wire was the only one "left" - and after connecting it to C the whole thing came to life (including the display unit). On the previous thermostat it was connected to a terminal labeled O...

By all means, check this. Could be your whole problem.

Bingo!

The orange wire was the trouble maker... After opening the AHU I could only see that it connects to something outside (?), plus it seemed to have higher Voltage on it... I also found the actual user manual of the existing unit and pulled a new low voltage connection to the Common. So far everything seems to work great. Thank you very much!!
