Can my wife claim her nephew as a dependent on her income taxe
My wife's nephew was born on September 15 2008 and has lived with us since then. His mother made less than 3,400 dollars this year, and my wife has provided more than half of his financial support. My wife's sister (nephew's mother) also lives with us and we provide more than half of her financial support. Can my wife also claim her as a dependent?

This is a tax question and I have asked that it be moved.

In the meantime, can anyone else claim the nephew and does the sister file her own income tax returns?

Your wife can claim the nephew on her taxes provided the child's mother is not claiming him. She can also claim the child's mother if the mother is not filing income tax this year and has not made more than the yearly minimum required to not file. These individuals must meet the IRS requirements though for your wife to properly claim them.
