    220V Needed?
Hi, all. I am having electrical outlets put in a garage. 8 total. 60 AMP breaker box installed. I have 2 right now that are separate, one for a frig and one for a window AC unit.

I am thinking about buying a window AC/Heating unit. The specs are below:
    Cooling Capacity 12,000/11,200 BTUs/hr.
    Amps (Cooling) 5.5 / 5.8
    Plug Type T blade (tandem)
    Rated Amps (Receptacle) 15
    Volts, Ttl. Connected Load 230 / 208
    Watts (Cooling) 1220 / 1170
    Watts (Heating) 3500 / 2900

Is 220 necessary and should I have the electrician put one in?

    Thanks for the advice.

If you check, I am sure you have typical residential voltage of 240 volts, the unit your are considering is rated 208/230 volts, popular with commercial installations.

Try to find a similar unit to match the voltage you have.

If you get something of silmlar size you will need to install a 240 volt 20 amp rated circuit and outlet.

Forgive me, but I am not very knowledgeable about this. Would this mean that I can have a separate outlet, 20 amps, connected directly from the breaker box, with the T outlet configuration, and be fine with the above unit? Or would I have to get one of the larger appliance connections that I have seen for dryers and ranges?

    Thanks for the help.

No,as long as the AC only is 20 amp or lower, only a 20 amp outlet is needed.
