My boyfriend is a recovering Heroin addict and taking suboxone for 6 months now. I've heard bad stories about coming off suboxone with bad withdraws and doctors saying they should be on it the rest of their life. He does not want to take suboxone for the rest of his life. How can someone come off this? Will there be bad withdraws no matter what? What is the point of the med if it's just as bad?

What's the point of the med? The point is to make more money for big pharma, that's the point. Basically, the suboxone is just as bad as the heroin. Basically, it's the doctors are "legal drug dealers" when you come down to the nitty gritty about it. This new designer drug (suboxone) is now the rage for doctors to prescribe and to supposedly insist that the patient take it for the rest of their lives. Swell. Your boyfriend needs to get off that drug as soon as possible.

Well I disagree, he was on the verge of killing himself by how much herion he was using. Suboxone saved his life. Obviously suboxone is better for him then herion, so that's not true. He is very thankful for it.

But he's addicted to yet another opiate only this time it's "legal" so what's the difference what he's addicted to... he's still addicted and needs to get off drugs completely. He will just have to go through withdrawals of some sort as staying on this suboxone is going to make him more dependent and take higher dosages to satifsy his cravings that he will get. He needs to get counseling and figure out just why he does drugs in the first place. Physical addiction and mental/emotional addiction go hand and hand. He needs to take care of both of these issues before he can get well.

He should NOT try to ween himself off this drug. Suboxone is a serious drug and he should talk with his prescribing doctor! He just needs to insist that he wants to eventually not be taking the medication. His doctor will work with him.

I was on suboxone for years. Last year at this time, I got off them. For four months I was free. But now I am back on once again, trying to get off. I know exactly what withdrawl is like. It is hell and took me almost a month to be able to sleep at night. The doctors have no idea... they think withdrawl is like the flu... it is SO NOT like the flu. I can't speak for anyone else on suboxone, I can only judge myself. I know that I am taking this drug to numb my feelings... I am working on coping skills so I can free myself from suboxone once and for all.
