The simplest way is to use an Ethernet Cross-Over cable to go between the two computer's Ethernet ports.

You can get more fancy and buy yourself a small switch which you can connect each of the computers to the switch using a regular ethernet jack.

Do you know if you have ethernet jacks on your desktop and laptop? What are the models? Depending on how old you might need to buy a NIC for your desktop (or even your laptop).

It would also help to explain WHY yo9u want to make the connection. That would have some bearing on the ways to do it.

If it's just for transferring files, and both computers have serial ports, you can use a null modem cable. Then, there are several terminal programs you can use to transfer the files between the two computers.
