My sensor is located right under the black pipe feding the gas to thr furnace and by the looks of it it seems hard to remove DOES IT JUST PULL OUT or will I need plylers to unscrew it. Hard to tell and I sure do not want to try and pull it out and find out it unscrews

See this link page 3 That is the best I can do for a picture. If the gas line is really in the way the it will have to be removed for the dervice of the flame sensor but a good mechanic should be able to work around that.

    HVAC1000,

Yes cleaning the flame sensor off seems to have done it I cleand it myself with a litle sand paper although I did not remove it I was able to reach in and work on it best I could.

Do have another qustion for you

I replaced my Thermostat a few months ago with a

    LUXTX1500b Thermostat

And SOMETIMES it will not kick on the furnace when it calls for it I sometimes have to turn it off than on again to kick the furnace on do you think I need another Thermostat
And if so WHAT WOULD BE A BETTER ONE to buy than the one I have now. I don't mind paying more for something better if it will work

Again thank you for your help with the flame sensor

    HVAV1000

I am so upset know looks like its doing the same thing again there are three burners and the first burner will light up, than either the second one will try to light and won't and than shut down will wait a minute or two and than try again. Sometimes it will light up sometimes it won't. I will turn it off using the Thermostat and turn I back on and find that works most of the time.

Do you think it's the Thermostat needing replacement or the flame sensor OR perhaps both. The Thermostat is only a few months old and the furnace itself is only two years old
    What do you think?

Thanks for all your help so far

If all 3 burners don't light together, you have a problem with flame carry-over. The burners may have dust build-up that is preventing effective cross-lighting, or the gas pressure is insufficient.

As KC13 says it could be a burner problem but a bad gas pressure regulator/gas valve can also cause this since it is intermittent in nature. The thermostat will not cause the burners to lite off improperly. A flame sensor just senses the flame a is a safety device to allow the gas valve to stay open so that is not causing the burner lite off problem.

This mat sound stupid (sorry I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to my furnace as you can tell) but is the gas regulator and the gas valve the same thing or are they different. Also how can I tell whih one (if there are different) is ausing the proble.

By the way I leave in Chicago and this coming wek its going to get REAL cold here.

Thanks for everything you have done so far

Do you have natural gas or LP?
  • Jan 11, 2009, 11:15 AM

    Natural gas

The main supply regulator is typically located near your gas meter. The gas control on the furnace also has a built-in regulator for adjusting gas input.

You need to get a accurate gas pressure reading at the gas valve on the furnace FIRST. Then see if it matches the imput rating on the furnace tag. If not then it will need to be adjusted. While the pressure test equipment is attached to the gas valve the unit can be fired up and then you will see if the pressure moves up or down and if the regulator is doing its job.
