I've been painstakingly careful about my mottled light gray granite countertop but somehow after only a couple of months it has a rather large yellowed area. I have no idea what might have caused it. I've read about making poultices for stain removal. Is this worth a try? Is there any chance I might do some harm? This is man-made granite, if that makes any difference.

This is just a long-shot here! You mention poultices, and I've never considered using them with stains, but it might be worth a try, especially if a stain might be organic in origin.

I don't know what you've read about concerning certain substances used in poultices for removing stains, however Flaxseed is something that you might want to give a try because of its ability to draw things out.

Thanks. I hadn't heard about flaxseed. The components of the poultice vary based on the nature of the stain, but the most common one looks like a combination of talc and hydrogen peroxide. It might be worth a try, but I'm just wondering if there's a chance it would do more harm than good.

I don't think that talc, hydrogen peroxide or even using Flaxseed would do any harm. To be absolutely sure though, I would test using them on an area that's not all that readily visible normally.
