My kitten that turned 1 years old on Dec 22 keeps scratching at doors, especially mine at night. (I have 2) I don't mind them sleeping in my room its just when they do finish sleeping before I wake up they play with the wires, scratch at my headboard, play with papers, jump on things, knock things off which also wake me up. Ive already thrown pillows and markers at the door, trying to show him its not all right but he keeps coming back, I understand he probably loves me (when Im laying of my back he lays between my legs like a nest, warmth?) but he has another companion, our older cat, that's furry, big and warm. They always run around the house crazy! We have balls, fake mice, and other toys to play with. And its not only my door at night but even when we go to the bathroom, he starts scratching at the door, we open, but he looks at us with his cute face and walks away (LOL). It seems like he has a phobia of not having access to rooms. We keep most of the rooms closed though because they knock things down and before we had a peeing problem (Which is mostly fixed unless we switch litter or miss a day of scooping up wastes, the little one is picky) so we don't want to make him remember, better safe then spending money on washing big blankets . But why does he keep scratching at my door?? :confused:

When I need my sleep I can't have cat in my room (3 years old) simply for the same reason you mention. If she wants me up, then I am up. You know they can be persistent.

Now, scratching at doors, you should have figured this out, jinxz, you seem to be pretty tuned in to you kitties, well, she is just checking to see where you are because of the bonding issue, basically you are her mom you know, so she has to stay in touch with you at all times. My cat does that too. I just mark it down to what I have mentioned and silliness.

LOL, Thank you. I thought it may be just that, I was just wanting to also know how to stop him doing it, or at least reduce it, winter break is almost over for me so I will be needing lots of sleep for the up coming late night projects and such. As I type this he's silently sleeping on my lap which I don't mind, I feel so loved by him, not to mention warm :p. Is there anything I can do to maybe reduce the scratching at night? Day time its okay but night, Im going to need my sleep.

Jinxz, you know cats, what can I say. Maybe if he gets something really stinky on his claws from scratching on the door, he will stop doing it. Check out a pet store maybe they have something you can spray, or whatever, that he doesn't like smelling in that area, and that will stop him from scratching. Good luck and let me know too, eh !

Hmmm that's a good idea, I haven't thought about that, my mind keeps going back to tin foil LOL. I was going to visit a pet store to go buy my cats a new bigger bed (They are so grown and big now!) tomorrow so I'll check that out too!

My cat hates the smell of toothpaste... I am sure she wouldn't like to lick it off your paws if she got some on them. That's something that wouldn't do a cat any harm !

Something that comes to mind too, that they may not like the smell of is, Vicks Vaporub. That wouldn't hurt the wood on your door and could be washed off.

Im pretty sure I have some Vicks Vaporub somewhere in the house... But I thought toothpaste contained something that helps whiten your teeth but if swallowed it kills brain cells? Isn't that one of the main reasons it says "Do not swallow!"?

I don't have any toothpaste in the house that says do not swallow. As for whitening toothpast, I don't buy it, I use baking soda on my toothbrush for that.

I found sticky strips at the pet store. You attach them to things you do not want scratched and my kitties all hate getting their paws sticky. (They do leave a residue on the surface you put them on, but.. . I'll worry about cleaning that off later.) Perhaps you can find something to put on the bottom of your doors that they do not like the texture of. Maybe wrap your doors in paper that has a lot of two-sided tape attached. I am sure I am not telling you something that you do not already know, but do make sure whatever you try is non-toxic to your pet.

I've never known a cat that didn't hate closed doors. They especially hate it when they are on one side and you are on the other. As tickle has said, this is just a cat thing. I've just accepted it and resolved to leave doors open. You can try the strips, but he may end up hurling his body at the door instead (that's what mine did when I tried them). The way I look at it, they have to accommodate us in all sorts of ways; this is one of the ways in which we have to accommodate them. If you stop and think about it, it's fair.

My cat does the same thing, as soon as I go to bed and fall asleep he is out in the hallway scratching the door and meowing loudly. Its sooo loud, I feel like I have a newborn baby, he won't let me sleep, then you get up to get him and he runs and its like he's laughing at me. He has full access to my bedroom, I don't get it. He runs around the house from door to door just crying and clawing, its driving me crazy. I don't know what to do but I really need a full nights sleep!! I get up and put him in bed with me and he ends up jumping down and doing it again! Argh!! Any suggestions?
