    Heat Pump compressor fan problem
I have a Trane XE 1000 heat pump manuf. In 2002. Yesterday, the A/C started having a problem, I checked the units inside and out and found the compressor fan not operating. The outside unit was hot and louder than usual. I turned it off overnight and this morning turned it on to find the fan operating, but, it seems to be slower than before. I hope this isn't my imagination because I don't want to lead to the wrong conclusion. However, I'm afraid to continue to operate the unit and make matters worse. I suspect a bearing lubrication or capacitor problem. My computer keeps booting me off so I am sending short messages. Check back soon. Bill.

Replace the motor and get a new capacitor to match. That is ,unless the unit is still under warranty. Some units have a 5 year warranty on parts. You will ruin compressor very fast without that fan running .Most of the newer motors have sealed bearings but if when you take the top up and see what looks like a small plug (yellow plastic or pot metal)on both ends of the motor over where the bearings are you can remove these (press fitted),and use straight 20 weight oil to lube it.Sometimes after the bearings are gaulded, even oil is only a temporary solution, though.A new motor should cost in the $60-$90 range.
