Without knowing where the short circuit is it is impossible to tell how much the labor and parts will be. To get a more accurate estimate I suggest you contact a local repair shop for a estimate.

What fuse is blowing? Is it a power supply fuse, or a small automotive-type fuse on the circuit board?

This will require some trial-and-error without a multimeter. How many extra fuses do you have?:o

If you see a square multi-pin connector plug near the center of the circuit board, disconnect it and then try another fuse. Does it still blow with connector unplugged?

First start by eliminating the thermostat from the equasion. Label and disconnect all thermostat wiring on the inside of the furnace. The labeling is important because once fixed you will need to hook them back up.

With the wires disconnected replace the fuse and repower the furnace. If the fuse still blows post back for further instructions.

Had you done some kind of work on the furnace and if so was the unit working before you worked on it.

If so let me know what you did and I will try to help you.

Unfortunately, professional service may be unavoidable unless you are satisfied to keep feeding parts to the machine. Sometimes, the sooner you bite the bullet, the fewer the teeth you break.

I had a similar problem with a couple of Goodman condensing units. The coil on the contacter shorted and blew the mini fuse.

Not sure if romdog realizes we are HVAC/R professionals lol.

It's way too difficult to pin down a price and to honest it would be unfair to both yourself and your service company. I do not like to give out numbers in a forum like this unless it is obvious someone is getting ripped off. In fact, other similar forums do not allow it at all. Bottom line is that we do not know for certain that this is your problem since you are not willing to do what was suggested. It could be something else all together.
