I would like to add a bathtub in the room next to an existing shower room. The floor is concrete slab with no existing plumbing (it is currently a spare bedroom). Is this even possible and what sort of things should I be thinking about before I think any further!!

Friends have pointed out that an elevated spa or tub may be the only way I can go so that I don't have to ruin the slab etc.

You have 3 options:

1. Raise floor by about 10"
2. Break concrete, install pipes under slab
3. There are few companies, like "Lasco" and "Zoeller" who make system where all sewage pours into integrated exterior collection unit and that unit pumps it to distant drain. This system doesn't require floor raising or slab cutting.

I would suggest the 2nd option since it is the proper way to approach your situation.

To use an elevated tub or spa you still will brobably have to break into the slab where you tie into the sewer pipe. Also you will have to gain access to the hot and cold watr pipes, you might be able to do this above the floor level.
If you sent a drawing of how things are going to be arranged it would be easier to answer your question.
