Hello. My well pump was hit my lightening late this past summer. A new pump was installed and all was great. Unfortunately, just yesterday our water is suddenly brown with dirt in it. (when the water drains from the sink there is black particles left) and the water itself looks brown. I live in Upstate NY we had a recent warm spell with some dramatic run off last week but now its back to cold winter temps so not sure if the run off might have something to do with this. I also have noticed that if I let the water run for a period after a few minutes the water pressure decreases slightly. Being a holiday weekend any help or advice that someone can give me will be GREATLY APPRECIATED!

It sounds like surface ground water might have gotten into the well. How is this well set up. Is the well pump in the ground pump pit. Or If the well cap is out side and the casing buried in the ground and you just had a heavy thaw etc. The cap seals were the well lines come through it aren't super tight its possible the water running / seeping in there is getting to bottom of well. Another possibility ( but slim) a well was drilled close by your aquifer, and effected the common aquifer now cloudy. With out getting crazy with purifiers and treatments. There is an in line cartridge filter that can be installed unless you already have one and it needs changed. Is simple installed on the water feed line past the pump. It has a cartridge filter about a foot high and 5 wide and this helps filter small particulates and maybe a bit of cloudy water "Filterlite" is one of many brands. If you are on your own well the water"decrease" has nothing to do with the holiday unless you well water in ground is shared or the well is getting low and that could produce cloudy water.

Boat. Thank you for your response! My pump is super far down in the ground (the guys that just replaced it commented on how deep it was compared to "normal" wells) I don't recall the depth they told me. I do have a well cap in the back yard now buried in snow! If this is going to be as simple as getting a cartridge I'm going to be thrilled!! I was scared that something was wrong with the pump itself and possibly needed replacement again. (We did have a freak electrical storm a few days ago when we had the severe thaw) I'm praying that's not the problem. Do you know if it's a possibility?

For now I would go with the cartridge to filter out the particles. Its good for aniline to be filtered even if you have a water softener. This will rid you the 'black things" The filter plastic cover is clear and a quick visual inspection to see if its dirty is great. Have a shut off valve on both sides of the line its on. Screw off cover pop off filter add new> I think the well should be all right.
