    Just a fan-
We just moved into a new home. It has a Harbor Breeze fan in the family room without a light fixture on it. The room seems dark would I be able to add a light to the fan or am I just kidding myself I need to buy a new fan/ light combo and hire an electrican?
    Thanks in advance

Regardless of whether you're adding a "light kit" or installing a new ceiling fan, it's an easy diy job.

Shut off the breaker before doing anything suggested here.

    1. If your current fan has a cap on the bottom of it, remove that cap and see if there is a black and white wire that are capped off. If there is, then take that cap to HomeDepot/Lowes and buy a light kit you like - being sure that it has the same base diameter as that cap.

    2. If you cannot add a light kit to your current fan, then buy the one you like that has the light kit already with it - and you'll find the instructions inside very easy to follow. In short, you'll just be hooking up two wires from your ceiling to two wires in the ceiling fan.

If the existing fan has a pullchain, you are able to add a light to it. The only fans that cannot take lights are

    1. Extremely old ones
    2. Industrial ceiling fans
    3. Certain modern designs

And all of these are, 99% of the time, controlled at the wall (or with remotes).

It's most likely to be blue and white. Other options are: black/white striped and white (Hunter), red and white (SMC), black and white, brown and white (Fasco/Marley), etc.. . And most of the time they are labeled "for light" or similar.
