I currently pay for two phone lines into my house.


One for my phone (Verizon)

One for my Verizon DSL – this was dial up line years ago



Since I am recently laid off I’m trying to cut cost. Verizon said I can have the phone and DSL on the same line. But it’s a $95 re-wire charge.



Both my phone line and DSL line connect at a gray box outside my house, on two separate connections a half a inch away from each other. Can I just move my DSL line over to the same connection that my phone line is on?

Yes, but maybe not in the way you might be envisioning. It cannot be simply disconnected from the current terminals and moved to the phone terminals without first physically disconnecting the phone line wiring to those terminals; and then either installing a splitter inside past the NID (grey box) and splitting out separate phone and data wiring (can repurpose existing wiring), or installing filters at each phone (several should have come with the DSL installation kit). Your voice phone number then will be that of the DSL line. Finally, the current phone line can be discontinued and disconnected.

Ignore the references to the RJ31x. The DSL splitter is about $52.00, but Verizon may install it free as part of the installation.
Furthermore, if you get a competent technician, he will install a no electronics box without a jumper that may make the DSL perform a little better.

Typically a standard phone installs, put a 1/2 ringer in the NID. They have learned that the short jumpers are problematic, so they are being replaced with a jack that contains internal movable contacts.

You either need a whole house splitter or no more than 5 filters on locations with phones. Only the DSL modem gets no filter.

Don't know if your current DSL line has dial tone.
