My wife and I recently purchased a 75 year old home. The previous owners had replaced the front door with a nice, new aluminum door, but only replaced the door, not the frame, weatherstripping, etc. They had used some of the adhesive weatherstripping stuff, but frankly it doesn't work very well and tends to peel off. We have LOTS of cold air entering through the front door. Can anyone suggest a more permanent solution to the problem? The bottom is sealed rather well, the door has a vinyl sweep, but air is penetrating on the sides and top of the door. Any products that you've found particularly useful in this application?

There are a variety of door weather stripping you can buy at big box stores for the jambs. Some you tack on and some you screw on there are a lot of varieties. I prefer one that is a slightly raised aluminum strip and has a gray rounded seal edge. This edge is thicker than others and the strip is screwed on. Is on the commercial side but what nice at any time you can back out the screws and readjust it. Its cut with a hacksaw. The holes the small screws go into are ob longed for perfect tweaking to adjust as opposed to a nail on. When you close the door and apply the nail on you need to be fairly dead on and not too much pressure against the door or closing and latching will be more "Push" on the door. The aluminum with the screws solves that "tweak" adjustment.

Stubits you can find weatherstripping that is metal with an attached rubber/vinyl strip. The metal attaches to the door jamb with the rubber seal strip toward the door. It comes with screws or nails. Close the door, install the weatherstrip snuggly against the closed door. May require adjusting over time. This weatherstripping comes in aluminum (silver) , white, bronze.
