How do I replace PVC p-trap and waste arm with chrome/brass one for a decorative drain to complement a pedestal sink? The PVC is screwed to the metal (galvnaized steel?) stub out at the wall. I would like the new p-trap and waste arm to be adjustable in/out to allow for the new drain location of the pedestal sink. I noticed some references to in other postings to Desanco fittings. Would a metal "Desanco type fitting" into the metal stub work? Will the old PVC unscrew from the metal stub? See pictures of existing PVC p-trap and waste arm, new chrome p-trap and metal Desanco fitting from watts.com. Any suggestions appreciated.

I think the solution that you have come up with is a good one. The PVC adapter should unscrew from the metal stub but if it should not come out easily you can always cut it off and then use a small hacksaw blade to make notches in the PVC left and then use a sharp screwdriver and place it between the metal and the PVC and tap with a hammer, the PVC will chip out, be careful that small parts don't go down the pipe in the wall, to do that you can stuff a rag in to stop any pieces from getting by.

The trap arm will slip in and out to adjust to the position you want to put your pedistal, but do not insert it so far into the wall that it blocks the flow of water out of the drain. You might have to use a 1-1/2X1-1/4 reducing plastic washer if you have to adapt at the tail piece coming out of the lavatory.

Also you might be able to find a deep escutcheon that will fit the trap arm and will slip against the wall the hide the brass fitting.This will have to be either 1-1/2 or 1-1/4 depending on the size of the trap arm.

Thanks for the quick reply. Can you make an educated guess as to if the male thread from the PVC into the metal stub is most likely 1 1/2" diameter? When I physically measure it I get between 1 1/2" to 2" dia. I'll need this dimension to size the metal Desanco type fitting.

There should be a size on the PVC trap, it will be on the band that goes around the end, also there will be a size on the adaptor.

You can use a 1-1/4 metal trap and make the reduction right where the trap arm goes into the brass fitting. You will use a plastic slip washer that is a reducing washer 1-1/2 X 1-1/4

Oh if I were you I would buy a 17 gauge metal P-trap. It has a thicher wall and should last longer.

Pedestal sinks stand close to the wall and drains are kind of tricky to install. You don't have too much space to play with. Since you have 1 1/2" C.I. female inlet, you will have to screw in 1 1/2" x Close gal (or brass) nipple to convert it to Male thread. Then, get 1 1/2" chrome trap assembly with metal nuts and rubber seals. As suggested above, also, get 1 1/2" deep escutcheon to cover the wall connection.

Does this solution eliminate the need for the Desanco fitting? If so, how would I connect the 1 1/2" x Close gal (or brass) nipple Male thread to the 1 1/2" chrome trap assembly with metal nuts and rubber seals? By the way, what is a "Close gal" nipple?

Here's a "close nipple"(see image) but I wish Milo would have put up a picture of the trap assembly he's talking about. I would have used a male Desanko fitting to pick up the chrome trap. And speaking of traps . A bottle trap,(see image ) makes a pedestal sink look spiffy. Hope this helps and thank you for rating my answer. Tom

Desanco fitting may be better idea than close nipple. Get Male x Male Desanco. It is a bit shorter than Close nipple. By using Desanco fitting, you will save about 1/4" of so of space. In this instance, 1/4" counts...
