I am a very worried mom. My son, who is 19 years old was diagnosed with mononucleosis almost 1 year ago. It seems since then, he catches everything that is going around. Presently he is sick with an oral thrush, has had a fever the last few days, although that has now cleared up, and a very sore throat as well. ( I have read the oral thrush can be from taking a course of antibiotics, and he recently did finish a course. Is it possible that his immune system has not recovered from having mono?

The fever usually drops in 10 days, and swollen lymph glands and spleen heal in 4 weeks. Fatigue usually resolves within a few weeks, but may linger for 2 to 3 months. After a year, I would suspect his imune system is down due to continuous illness, I suggest consulting your family Dr for a blood screening to assure nothing more serious is going on, just as a precaution.

I agree with Stormy, she is very well up to date on her "stuff." You should consult your doctor to make sure there is nothing else going on.

However, when my sister had mono many moons ago it took her well over a year for her system to be back up to normal.


And yes, antibiotics will cause oral thrush. Oral thrush is a form of a yeast infection which is very common. Antibiotics tend to kill all of the good bacteria in our bodies as well as the bad and this will usually cause a yeast infection in the vaginal area for women and babies or the mouth for men and babies as well.

Hello, I am a 21 year old male who also had mono last year and was on anti-biotics last summer.

I have a case of oral thrush too, and it seems like it never wants to go away. I got freaked out because oral thrush goes along with other diseases, and I automatically assume the worse. But, my fears were put to rest after going to the doctor.

Because I have had the mono and taken anti-biotcis, how long before my immune system goes back to normal? And after doing some research, whatever causes oral thrush loves foods with a lot of sugar, hot and spicy foods and alcohol. This is a tough diet to break.

Does oral thrush eventually go away? I just want to get rid of it. It's embarrassing.

For oral thrush to go away you need to go back to the doctor and get on an anti-fungal medication.

Thrush is a form of a yeast infection, which is a fungus. It is very easy to fix, but oral thrush is fixed by prescription only.

You could try rinsing your mouth a couple of times a day with diluted Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE). It has very potent action against Candida yeast. Though, if strict dietary restrictions aren't maintained, lasting results are unlikely to be obtained. It is a very difficult thing to treat. Prescription meds will probably obtain you faster, easier results.

Thanks J 9. Just wanted to note. Didn't mean to sound in any way contradictory, if I did. Just posting my own experiences as a Lyme sufferer treated with too many antibiotics. Herbs can be effective, but it's tough sometimes.

In no way did you sound contradictory, I do not know too much about herbs, other than the ones in my garden and I use them in my food. LOL

There are many antibiotics that will cause oral thrush, it may take a combination of medications/herbs to clear this up.

For the record, thrush is an overgrowth of yeast in the mouth which forms white spots or irrregular shapes on the roof of the mouth, inner cheek, and less often, the tongue. Because antibiotics eliminate some normal bacteria, the yeast organisms, which are normally present in small amounts, can overgrow. Thrust can also happen with impaired immunity - in newborns (the immune system is still developing), in the very old, or with diseases that impair immunity such as HIV infection, where it is very common. There are a number of other conditions, which may not be serious. If the thrush is persistent, an important part of the evaluation is an HIV test, especially since HIV can cause a syndrome which closely resembles mononucleosis.

If there are any HIV risk factors in an otherwise healthy 19 year-old male, it should be checked. But don't jump to conclusions, its just one of a number of conditions. And sometimes, we just don't know why one person gets thrush easily, and someone else never does. (Infectious Diseases Specialist)

Mono take its toll on the immune system. He is probably not fully recovered which is why he's so susceptible to various infections. Continue to discuss your concerns with his doctor.
