Boss wants to change our pay from every other week to the 1st and the 15th. We are just not sure if we want to do this. The boss said it comes out the same as now, but there has to be a reason to benefit him he wants to do this so bad. What is the reason he would want to do this after 13 years working for him and is there a reason we might not want to change to this? What are the pros and cons for Boss and Employees with this 1st and 15th pay periods over every other Friday pay periods.

First he does not need your permision, he can change the pay period or even your amount of pay if he wants unless you have a contract.

There is no difference except you will have 24 pay checks a year instead of 26 paychecks.

The 24 checks will equal the same amount of money as the 26 checks

There is one difference that was noticeable for me and that was that you will wait longer between pay periods. It is only a few days but it does end up consisting sometimes of two full weekends before being paid, maybe three twice a year? Not for sure on that one. However, it's only a couple of days but it does make a difference sometimes and for sure in the beginning. I used to have that payroll schedule and that was one draw back for me. I had gotten used to pay every other Friday. Once you reestablish your habits you will be fine. Meaning savings for plans etc. I had a tendency to charge more rather than use available cash. Besides that I would say the benefit for him is that he gets to keep the money in the bank a little longer maybe gaining interest?

The advantage to the employer is that he will cut fewer checks/direct deposits and that will cost him less in the long run. It will also simplify his payroll if the paydates are the same every month.

If he wants to do this, there is little you can do except quit.

I'm not sure what your business is, but I know my supervisors always complain when there is a "three paycheck" month because it makes our bottom line look bad.

Our bonuses and productivity is broken up into months, so when we have those three paycheck months, although we are still getting paid the same amount, on paper, payroll increases by one third.

It could be a benifet for you and your boss if you are on some kind of monthly bonus plan. You won't have to worry about those three paycheck months eating at your bonus, yet you will still make the same amount of money annually.
