delta model # 14478 - reversed hot and cold
Hi. I have installed my delta faucet (one handle).. the scald guard faucet... in the "off" position, the handle is at
"3-o'clock".. to turn it on, you rotate it counter-clockwise... in the fully "on" position, the handle is at "12 o'clock"... however, hot comes out first... then cold...
so, when the handle is at "12 o'clock", cold water comes out, and when you turn it on, hot water comes out...
can this be fixed without breaking tile?
    is it easy to do?
    thanks
can anyone help me with this that has had similar experience? I know there is 1=800 help line, but would like to hear from someone who has first hand experience... thanks

If I am not mistaken, this Delta single handle faucet utilizes cartridge as pictured in photo below. The handle should be pointing down in closed position, not to 3 o'clock. That's your problem. Ok, let's try to fix it. I will offer three ways to correct your installation. The first one is the easiest, last one will require bit more skill. Ok, Do this:

    1. Remove handle. There is a anti-scald guard. ( wheel with teeth). Toss it. Spin stem clock wise until it stops. Reinstall handle. Not it should be pointing downward. See if that worked.

    If not, do this:

    2. Remove handle while in Close position. Turn middle stem 180 degrees. Reinstall handle. See if you have h/c water on correct side

If this doesn't help, than do this:

    3. Turn water off for the bathroom at main valve. Remove handle, remove nut holding cartridge in, remove cartridge, spin it 180 degrees around, reinstall nut, reinstall handle, turn water on. That should do.

Let us know how you did...

No - unless you replaced entire body valve and your plumber installed in in reversed position. This doesn't happen often - but I have seen it before. It should be only matter of re-adjusting the handle, anti-scold ring, and turning stem to correct position. These adjustments are done from the outside.

What do you mean by "entre body valve"?

... it was a complete gut reno job... I did see the pipes behind the cement board, but forgot what they looked like... and I did see them go into the cartrdige, but again, with the tiles on, forget what it looks like behind the tiles.

Have you called your installing contractor, most would be happy to correct their minor error free of charge. It's called a callback and contractors are used to getting a few.

Yes, I will have to contact my contractor. Will let you know how it turns out.

    Thank you for the post:

I think you may be able to do it by removing handle and turning the middle stem 180 degrees.

I not, you will have to turn water off, remove the valve cartridge and turn it 180 degrees around.

    Happy Holidays

Sorry, I am confused... which is the "middle stem" and which is the "valve cartrdige"?. how does the hot/cold water from the enter into the cartridge and give me hot/cold water? - in other words, what purpose does rotating it 180' do? I can think about logically, but am worried that somehow it involves soldering, copper pipes, and breaking tiles...
Is there any way you can include a pic?

    As I explained:
    Put handle in Closed position.
    Remove it.
    Turn middle stem 180 degrees
    Reinstall handle.

Now, if it won't go 180 degrees, than you will have to remove all cartridge, and install it the other way up.

"Stem / Middle stem" is the brass piece sticking out in the middle of your faucet that handle attaches to.

Yep, this should solve your problem. However, if you really don't feel comfortable working on this by yourself, the original installer should be able to fix the problem in about one to five minutes, free of charge, since it should have been tested for correct operation in the first place.

From a plumbers standpoint, I actually like when the customer calls me back to fix my mistakes. Every callback makes me learn to better myself. If you fix it yourself, the installer will never know he made a mistake. Therefore he will never learn to check things more thoroughly. Just a thought. Good luck and let us know how things work out.

Hi Milo and afaroo (and my girlsdad)...
OK, because I would want to try this myself and you are being extremely helpful... another question...
Do the pipes (are these pipes which carry H / C water? Do they move? Or do they stay connected to the water supply?

Well, here is a photo (with additional arrows. Etc from the original)...

Supply pipes won't move. When you try to turn the stem, it should turn very easily. Do not force it. If it doesn't turn 180degrees, them you will have to shut water off to house, and remove cartridge and rotate 180.

Yes I agree with mygirlsdad, nothing else will rotate just the stem, remove the handle rotate the stem 180 degrees install the handle and check, if that woldn't help, then do like mygirlsdad say remove the cartridge and rotate it, make sure you shut off the water, good luck.
