I am replacing a 4-ton upflow furnace in a rental house. I have 1 quote for $1400 using american standard and another for $1200 using a Payne.
The tech for the Am Stan tells me the Payne is a very poor unit.
Any infor on what is best?

Sure they did because they do not sell Payne-Bryant or Carrier. These three units are made by the same company.
Either price sounds very cheap if it includes labor.
An American Standard dealer calling Payne a poor unit? Help! I'm laughing so hard... I've fallen... and I can't get up! Oh yeah, you don't want that Chevy crap, let me put you in a nice Yugo! Puh-leez...
American Standard is made by Trane and you will experience the same troubles getting parts as you would with a Trane. Go with the Payne unit. Parts are readily available and usually cheaper.
