    Clayton Wood Furnace
I am 18 years old and my father passed away recently, he was the only one who knew how to use our Clayton wood furnace.

Can anyone tell me how to start it, and if anything needs to be checked before we do start it? It hasn't been used since last winter and a family friend has been trying to help but I would like some more expert advice.

    Thank you

    Sorry for your loss.

You might want to try posting over at hearth.com for some folks who really know wood stoves and the like.

In the meantime get yourself a good CO detector until you learn how to use that furnace.

Hi I don't know if you've found your answers yet but I hope I can help. First start by making sure the chimney is clear of creosote. Then make sure firebox is clean. To do so you have to disconnect chimney from top of furnace, inspect smoke chamber for ash and debris, if so vacuum out. If you don't feel comfortable contact a local stove shop to come in and professionally check. Make sure all draft vents are working, door seals are tight. Make sure you have electrical power going to it ie; breakers are switched to that power. Other than that start a small fire and check for leaks, if no leaks and everything look good then gradually build it up. If you can tell me if it is forced hot air or boiler I can help you a little more. Good luck! :o
