    Chosing apartment pet
I live in an apartment as I have done since I was little. Unfortuntely every apartment I have lived in has not allowed cats or dogs as they cause too much noise and trouble. Also a lot of the body corp members share the view that it is wrong to keep a cat locked up all day. My 55 year old grandmother whom I live with is on this body corp. it will be another two years before I can move out of home and go away to uni but she has recently told me that I am allowed smaller pets that do not make as much noise as a cat or dog I:e guinea pigs, fish or ferrets.
The trouble is that most suggestions I come up with she does not like. I can only come up with a small list of animals and I also live in new zealand. Can anybody please help me add to the list? I have always wanted a pet since I was a little girl but was never allowed one. Please help I'm out of ideas. here's what I have so far. -
Turtles, ferrets, guinea pigs, mexican walking fish, rats, normal fish, rabbits, lizards or hedgehogs.
    Thanks. Peachs.

I have had a snake for 12 years.

She is a teaching tool for people who believe in the biblical 'evil snake' image verses the 'just another animal' a thing of nature, not evil.

Snakes don't require a lot,a cage or terrarium,a hot rock for low heat times(and aids digestion.. etc) water, and the feeding.(mice aren't difficult if you have thought about rats for pets.)

Upkeep is nothing more than cleaning the wood chip base when it expels, and it NEVER barks, never needs 'walked',in time a snake will become just another part of the family.Oh yeah, they never talk back either...

    Just a thought:)

Living here in the states, snakes are not 'regulated'(maybe the poisonous ones)

My snake is a native one to the area where I live,it's a Fox snake(nicknamed for the smell when it expels,it smells like a fox den... uggg.. lol)

I made a cage for her to accommodate her growth, she had outgrown her glass fish tank.

If you really want a snake, check into the reptile section in your zoo,or local pet store and you can find out what you would need for a permit and for what kind you can have without a permit.

    Good luck,

Hamsters, gerbils or mice also make great apartment pets. My personal choice, mice. Mice are very easy to train, a lot more than hamsters or gerbils.

I guess I'm going to the opposite spectrum then KBC. ;)

If you don't want something fur covered and cuddly I LOVE turtles.

I love turtles too. They're illegal to own here in Alberta, so I can't have one. :(

Besides, I think we can all agree that I need another pet like I need a hole in my head! ;)

You didn't put birds on your list. The Australian Grass Parakeet is sweet, calm and really quiet. Mine likes to snuggle under my hair in the evenings. Not a big mess-maker either.

I'll agree with KBC about snakes. If you can have one, they're wonderful pets.

I love birds but I've never had a quiet one. ;)

I think snakes are great, but I have bunnies. Bunnies and snakes don't mix, or not for long anyway. ;)

Bunnies are great apartment pets, very quiet, very loving, very sweet and cuddly.

If you are thinking about a bunny I can give you all the info you need on how to care for it, how to choose a bunny and all the supplies you need.

Now, the snake I can't help you with. ;)
