My wife was running the vacuum cleaner when it suddenly stopped. I checked the breakers and nothing was flipped. After checking, it appears that all the outlets in one room are out and at least one outlet in the next room over. The overhead lights are working though, and as I said, the breakers have flipped. What could this be?

Sounds like a bad outlet. Try testing the outlet where the vacuum was plugged into first.
