You can ask about what things they enjoy. Ask if they like sports, types of hobbies, things they like to do in their spare time, music,
Favorite season, holiday, foods, etc...
Things that drive you crazy -rush hour, pushy people,.
Think of a funny story to tell him/her. If your good at telling it, it'll be an instant exchange of stories. If you've known the person for a while, try to joke around about stuff you usually joke about. The goal is to find some mutual ground you guys can talk about.
Yeah funny stories are always good, start with a story you like and then they might have a few themselves ;) maybe start with a story you know they can relate too... if you know such a story\subject.
Hehe a good rule though; don't discuss hard subjects like politics, religion... seeing as people can be touchy and very different on things like that.
What do you work with? Usually works for me to talk about work once the ice is broken (whether it be a date or just a casual conversation with someone at a party and such) (I work with kids who have autism, which usually leads to a talk about what autism is etc.)
Asking about interests is good, and hobbies, music, movies etc.
