How do you determine the water column on a natural gas meter using a digital manometer?
If you are looking to adjust a appliance you remove the tap on the gas valve and screw in the adapter. Hook up the hose from the manometer and turn the gas back on. Light off the equipment and adjust valve to give 3.5 in wc for NG or look at the unit rate plate and adjust to that setting.
Now if you are trying to see where the meter pressure regulator is set on the utility side I highly recommend calling the utility in your area to first of all to get the street pressure and to find where there regulators are set at from the factory before they are shipped to them. Then ask them if they offer a free service for the check. In my area they do this for free but if not then you will have to find the acccess point after the regulator, fire up all gas appliances in the home then adjust to THERE approved setting. I would like to add that you cannot make up for to small of a gas line or branch line in the home by raising the gas pressure. You will have more pressure but very little more volume and that volume is what it is all about.
This situation is especially a problem with the more efficient boilers that want to see a 3/4 to 1 inch supply when the old boiler was using 1/2. if this is the case increasing the gas pressure will not help much.
